NVIDIA announces GTX480M, frying eggs on notebook now possible.

Ever since AMD announced that their chips will be on 100+ models of notebooks beginning end of this year, Nvidia is having nightmares every night. The woodscrew Fermi was trashed around, delayed, and getting nicknamed by its friends and schoolmates and haters. AMD’s 5000-series had a great leap ahead of Nvidia in the DirectX 11 market, and was blasting away enjoying its runaway success. Nvidia finally go live with their Fermi around March, but 6 months late isn’t the main thing concern here anymore. The Fermi was huge, hot, and power-hungry. It barely won over the 5000-series.

Now, Nvidia has announced that the Fermi based GTX480M is going to notebooks next month. Of cause, the main issue that everyone ponders would be the power consumption. Nvidia stated that the total graphics power draw (GPU + RAM) is 100W, which is higher than the current high-end GTX285M.

Expected features are like CUDA, PhysX, OpenCL, PureVideo, and obviously DX11. Although Optimus is ready, it is unlikely any vendors would put such a powerful cheap with budget processors. The GTX480M will also be part of the Verde Driver Program. Hard specs wise, it has 352 “CUDA” Cores, core clock of 425MHz, shader clock of 850MHz, 256-bit of memory, and 600MHz GDDR5 memory (effectively 2400MHz). SLI is also possible on this chip, though its likely any vendors will release SLI-Ready notebooks that soon.

So, anybody gonna buy 1 of these beasts, and fry some eggs while gaming?

Steve finally surpasses Bill, by an inch.

Apple has finally surpassed arch-rival Microsoft to become the world’s biggest technology firm.
Changes in the share price values of the two in yesterday’s choppy trading left the total value of Apple at $222bn (£154bn) while Microsoft is now valued by investors at $219bn.

The worth, known as market capitalization, is calculated by multiplying the number of shares in a company by the current share price. Although Apple shares closed down 0.4%, Microsoft fell by 4%.

Apple, which makes computers, iPods, iPhones and now iPads, almost went bankrupt in the 1990s. Its successful growth is partly owing to the launch of the company’s stylish and trendy iPod in 2001, which is loved by all ages and considered by many to be the only music player to get. Apple is hoping for a bigger contribution in their annual profit with this week’s launch of the iPad, the company’s new and successful tablet computer that sold millions in the States, in UK and eight other countries.

Next month Apple will be unveiling the next generation of the iPhone, the company’s smartphone that has brought internet access on the move to the mass market, and led to an explosion in downloadable mobile “apps” – applications that enable a huge range of activities, from map reading to booking restaurants. Apple’s iPhone has set a new standard in the market of smartphones, and many have seen the iPhone as the default phone to get.

The last time Apple was ahead of Microsoft was back at 1989, which is a long way. Microsoft, whose operating system runs on more than 90% of the world’s personal computers, has not been able to match growth rates from its hey-days of the 1990s, although its last sales figures were still higher than Apple’s.

3D Mark is finally ready to crunch your DirectX 11 GPU.

It’s been quite some time since the last of the 3DMark from FutureMark surfaced. That’s probably due to their intensive development to develop a new version of the highly rated benchmark software used worldwide. The new version includes new tessellation techniques to add amazing depth and details to newer games. The new software will be able to stress DirectX 11 GPUs to the fullest.

FutureMark stated that the software will be showcased to public at Computex and will be available on retail in Q3 of 2010. As usual, a free version will also be available for home gamers to drool over the uber graphics generated by their new and underutilized babies.

Logitech’s Standalone Google TV Box is powerful

Well that is according to Intel anyway. Engadget was at Google I/O and snuggled into the Logitech’s booth hand played with the Google TV box by Logitech.

The Logitech’s standalone box is powered by Intel’s CE4100 1.2GHz “Sodaville” Atom processor (*if not?), 4GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, two USB ports (*should be USB2.0), a rear I/O panel with a wired Ethernet port (*unlikely to be Gigabit), two IR headers, and a pair of HDMI 1.3 ports.

Wondering if I missed the GPU part? Nope, I didn’t. The CE4100 is a SoC (system-on-chip) Atom processor, running on Powervr SGX535 on-die, and Intel calls it GMA500. Intel claims that the processor only uses seven to nine watts, able to decode two simultaneous 1080p video streams at up to 60 frames per second, contains 7.1 audio outputs, and will be able to run Adobe Flash-based content. Sounds wonderful? But no benchmark is out yet, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

“To our surprise, the Logitech product manager pulled out a Nexus One and iPhone,” writes Sean Hollister. “He explained that the companion box has all the technology of Logitech’s $400 Harmony 900 remote and extends it to your handset over Wi-Fi.” – Engadget.

To celebrate Pac – Man 30th Anniversary, and to show cast HTML5, Google has made a ‘playable’ Google logo on their main search page Google.com.

As expected, many daily Google users would stop by for a brief seconds to relax and play the game. But apparently that cost a lot. So says The Rescue Time Blog.

“ This weekend, we took a hard look at Pac-Man D-Day and compared it with previous Fridays (before and after Google’s recent redesign) and found some noticeable differences. We took a random subset of our users (about 11,000 people spending about 3 million seconds on Google that day) The average user spent 36 seconds MORE on Google.com on Friday. [...]

If we take Wolfram Alpha at its word, Google had about 504,703,000 unique visitors on May 23. If we assume that our user base is representative, which means:

- Google Pac-Man consumed 4,819,352 hours of time (beyond the 33.6m daily man hours of attention that Google Search gets in a given day)
- $120,483,800 is the dollar tally, if the average Google user has a COST of $25/hr (note that cost is 1.3 – 2.0 X pay rate).
- For that same cost, you could hire all 19,835 Google employees, from Larry and Sergey down to their janitors, and get 6 weeks of their time. Imagine what you could build with that army of man power.

Google is getting better and better with their services. Last time they started the Gmail, and expanded its capacity greatly until other services had to follow suit. Later they enable SSL encryption on their products ranging from Gmail to Google Docs and others.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) connections encrypt data that travels between your computer and that particular site. There would usually be a web address starting with “https” or a browser lock icon when surfing SSL encrypted sites, this technology is regularly used by online banking sites and e-commerce websites. Other sites may also implement SSL in a more limited fashion, for example, to help protect your passwords when you enter your login information.

EFF Proposes New Bill Of Rights For Facebook Users

As we now know, Facebook and its users have different opinions on the appropriate levels of privacy for the site. Users want more, Facebook wants less. While Facebook already has their own bill of rights for users, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is proposing their own Bill of Rights for users.

Now, a little history lesson. Back in the good old days, when the union was new and the government was young, people created a Bill of Rights to protect certain universal individual liberties. This Bill of Rights has become the foundation of our society, and every day we fight to protect our ideals of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, due process, equal protection, etc. The framers of the Constitution felt that unless these rights were specifically spelled out in a separate and binding document, they would never be properly protected. And they were important enough to stand apart on their own in what is arguably the most meaningful document that has ever been created in this country.

Presently we find ourselves amidst a similar situation with Facebook. Users have expressed that they don’t feel as though they and their data are being adequately protected. They feel as though they are at the mercy of Facebook, and they just have to roll with whatever privacy controls are thrown at or taken away from them, or take their profiles elsewhere. Of course, there is always the caveat that Facebook is a private site, and can run its business as it pleases as long is it does so legally. It is not a government and it does not owe its users the same consideration that our government owes to us. But some are calling for a Bill of Rights of sorts to protect users, their information and their interests.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has begun by proposing three basic principles that all social network users should demand. First they call for the right to informed decision making whereby users can “make informed choices about who sees their data and how it is used.” They also want users to be notified when a government or private party uses a legal process to obtain information about them. Second, they want the right to control “the use and disclosure of their own data,” such that users must opt in or opt out of any secondary data sharing. Last, users should have the right to delete their information completely should they decide to deactivate from the site. Others have proposed similar breakdowns of these principles, basically calling for user data control and transparency about what of their data is shared and with whom.

Facebook does have a set of “Facebook Principles” which states that people should own their own information, have the freedom to share it with whoever they want, and set privacy controls to protect their choices in this respect. Why does it seem like Facebook isn’t practicing what they preach?

Researchers are urging better security for our deep-sea cables, as they claim it to be very vulnerable to threads, be it natural disasters or human factor accidents.

“As global Internet and communication links 99 per cent relies on undersea cables instead of satellite, our global economics might get choked all of a sudden if it get sabotaged” – says Alan Mauldin, an analyst at Telegeography Research.

Karl Rauscher, for Bell Labs engineer who compiled the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) publicly request for better security towards submarine cables, at the Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit in Dallas, Texas, last week.

The report stated that many of the cables passing through choke points, such as the Strait of Malacca near Singapore, the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines, and the Suez Canal, are extremely vulnerable. Damage to the cables at these points could lead to phone networks becoming jammed and internet traffic slowing to a crawl, which means economy might crawl leading to many issues.

Examples would be incidents like the Howard Street tunnel running beneath downtown Baltimore, where a freight train derailed and spilled 20,000 liters of hydrochloric acid, thus destroying undersea fibre-optic cables. Other incidents like cables getting caught in fishing nets, and those that got damaged by ships’ anchors.

The report not only urge for tighter security on submarine fibre-optic cables, but also calls for new cables built on alternative routes to provide back-up to vulnerable points in the gigantic network.

Fancy an oversized touchscreen PSP on droid?

8.9” and comes with somewhat multitouch, this is Nvidia’s answer to iPad. Round edge, white plastic-like back plate, and supposedly powered by Android. Though according to Gizmodo, the looks does not justify its capability.

Obviously it is powered by Nvidia’s upcoming Tegra 2, which is actually a dual-core ARM Cortex A9, somewhat more powerful than iPad’s A4 processor. Now, why is it gonna win Apple’s iPad? Because on the paper it has better muscle, and a gig of RAM, while cheapskate Apple’s iPad only got a puny 256MB RAM. What’s more, it has USB ports, and a good damn integrated front cam!

According to Gizmodo, “Given that both of the units we handled were running just one app each—pretty snazzy looking games—it’s hard to tell what it’ll be like to use generally, like with the front-facing camera and how the widescreen aspect ratio feels outside of a game, but the games did feel and look great, as you’d expect from the kind of horsepower inside. I wish the screen, which is capacitive for multitouchness, wasn’t quite as glossy as the iPad though. Oh well.”

Fancy Windows 7 might not be so save after all

Well looks like someone has found serious security vulnerability in Bill Gate’s latest money-milking operating system the Windows 7. Apparently users may be exposed to code execution and denial-of-service attacks, Microsoft warned in an advisory issued on Tuesday.

The threat, which was openly discussed ahead of Microsoft’s advisory, only affects the latest Windows 7 and windows Server 2008 R2, though was denied of any forms of attacks attempted related to exploiting this flaw.

This issue was found in the Canonical Display Driver (cdd.dll), which is used by Windows 7 to unify the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) and DirectX drawing.

MSRC blog:

Code execution, while possible in theory, would be very difficult due to memory randomization both in kernel memory and via Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). Additionally, this vulnerability only affects Windows systems if they have the Aero theme installed; Aero is not switched on by default in Windows Server 2008 R2, nor does 2008 R2 include Aero-capable graphics drivers by default.

Microsoft believes that, in case where the attacker successfully exploited this vulnerability, the affected system would stop to respond, and automatically restart. Therefore, the Windows 7 teams are now standing by for processing the patches need once investigations are complete.

So I guess this is a good time to disable that Windows Aero Theme huh?
