Mark zuckerberg going to provide internet for all.

Posted on 02:01 by Unknown

For nine years, we’ve been on a mission to connect the world. We now connect more than 1 billion people, but to connect the next 5 billion we must solve a much bigger problem: the vast majority of people don’t have access to the internet.

I’m focused on this because I think it’s one of the greatest challenges of our generation. I’ve attached a rough plan I’ve written outlining the work Facebook is doing to solve this and how our industry can work together to connect the next 5 billion people.

Is Apple Moving to Plastic Bodies for Low Cost iPhone and iPad?

Posted on 20:15 by Unknown

Rumors of a low-cost version of Apple’s mobile devices have been in the pipeline for sometime now. There have been mockups, concept photos, supposed leaked images, and even a concept video of what a low-cost iPhone might look like. Until now, these rumors and speculations have been just that. Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call even suggested that the low-cost iPhone has already been on the market in the form of the iPhone 4 and 4S.

However, a recent report from the China Labor Watch shows that, at least one of Apple’s suppliers is working hard on a plastic backed mobile device.

Blog site 9to5Mac noted that a full report from an undercover CLW member describes a day in the life of a worker at Pegatron, one of Apple’s biggest manufacturing supply partners.

In addition to calling out a large amount of labor violations, the report noted a couple of things that point to evidence of the purported low-cost iPhone.

The statement from the CLW notes that Pegatron is currently assembling products for Apple, “Including iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones.”

In addition, one of the journal entries from the CLW member states, “Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines.”

Based on the information in the report, dated early July of 2013, the plastic backs for the low-cost iPhone are not yet in mass production at Pegatron. If other factories are on the same pace, it is likely that the cheaper model will not launch this fall, but is one of Apple’s many products that will launch “throughout 2014.”

While none of these rumors have pointed to a low-cost iPad, it is likely that Apple is working on a cheaper tablet as well. Currently, the company holds less than half the market share of tablets. One way to gain traction would be to produce a tablet that could compete better with the likes of Amazon’s Kindle Fire. A $250 iPad would be a big hit with consumers that are just entering the tablet market. Plus, I know I would love to have a blue-backed iPad. It would be so cute.

Is Feedly a worthy replacement of Google Reader?

Posted on 04:28 by Unknown

On July 1, we say goodbye to Google Reader, a handy tool for bringing headlines and articles from your favorite websites into a single place.

With Reader, I've been able to see at a glance all the updates from various news services, blogs and company websites I follow. Although many of these items relate to work, I have added a few fun topics, too, including news on Antarctica and a daily dose of passive aggressive notes that people send each other.

I have spent a lot of time curating Reader, so I'm not keen on seeing it die.

Fortunately, there's an afterlife. Google has made it easy to move your list of sites you follow, known as feeds, to another service. And many of those rival services have made it easy to accept those feeds, especially after Google said in March that it would retire Reader.

Reader's demise comes as little surprise. Google says usage has declined since Reader made its debut in 2005.

RSS feeds - for really simple syndication - used to be a popular way to keep track of multiple websites without having to visit each and every one. Content comes to you, through readers such as Google Reader. More recently, though, Twitter and Facebook have performed a similar role in discovering content. I myself have logged on to Reader less frequently because keeping up with more than 150 feeds from dozens of sites became overwhelming.

Yet I still check it now and then for a glimpse of what's out there.

As July 1 approached, I looked at a half-dozen alternative services. All of them are free, like Reader. It didn't take long to find one that exceeds what Reader offers in many ways, though a few omissions will leave me missing Google's offering.

The service that stands out is Feedly. An update available Wednesday allows Feedly to run on just about any major Web browser. The service also is available through apps on the iPhone, the iPad and Android devices.

Transferring your feeds from Reader is easy.

Most other services require you to create a data file of those feeds using a Google tool called Takeout. It's fairly straightforward, but you then have to save the file to your computer and import that to the service. In one case, only one of the more than 150 feeds survived the transfer because of some glitch.

With Feedly, you can skip that step. Simply log in with your Google account, and all that gets done automatically. There's also no need to create and remember a separate Feedly account. You use your Google credentials each time you're back.

On Reader, I have my feeds organized by category into folders. Those categories remain intact on Feedly, though they appear alphabetical rather than topical, as I had arranged them on Reader. It isn't too difficult to reorder them.

Feedly excels in highlighting the most popular items from all your feeds, based on sharing and other interactions on Feedly and elsewhere. Simply visit a page called "Today." Under the default layout, you see headlines and the first sentence or two of each item. You can click on any item for more.

You can also share the item on a number of social networking sites. That freedom isn't available on Reader, which confines sharing to Google's own Plus service.

My four main complaints with Feedly

1. You can save a link to read later, but it would have been better had Feedly fetched those items as well so you can read them offline.

2. Although the service lets you email items to others, you have to go through stand-alone software such as Outlook, which is often tied to your work account. By contrast, Reader lets you email over the Web using Google's own Gmail service.

3. With Reader, items are automatically marked as read as I scroll down, so that they won't reappear the next time. Feedly does that, too, in a non-default layout that most resembles Reader's. That part is good. But while Feedly offers additional layout options, it doesn't take full advantage of its greater breadth. It would have been nice to have auto-marking when scrolling in those layouts as well.

4. Many websites let you easily add their feeds by clicking on a button. Reader is usually among the options, but Feedly isn't yet. Instead, you must copy and paste the Web address for the feed into Feedly. But Feedly is better than Reader at suggesting feeds to add, if you don't have specific ones in mind for a given topic.

I did try one other service that makes it as easy as Feedly to transfer feeds from Reader and discover new ones. But that service, called Pulse, does require you to set up a separate Pulse account or use Facebook's - not Google's. If you can get past that added hassle, Pulse does the rest of the work for you once you log in to your Google account. There's no Google data file to create, save and import.

Unfortunately, articles are presented as tiles, similar to what you see in Microsoft's oft-criticized Windows 8 operating system. That works fine when you're choosing apps on a tablet computer. On desktop and laptop computers, I find a list much easier to read and scroll through. I had a backlog of more than 20,000 articles, and I wasn't about to click on 20,000 squares.

There are dozens of other services I didn't get a chance to try. Some of them are more geared toward mobile devices. Others are still in development. For example, a popular site called Digg promises one on June 26, just five days before Reader's cutoff.

I'm sure there's one out there that matches or exceeds what Feedly offers, but I saw no need to look further.

Feedly has tripled its user base to 12 million since Google announced Reader's retirement. The growth has given Feedly incentive to work on new features. Feedly has also designed the system so that outside developers can build apps for it. You can use one to run Feedly on BlackBerry phones, for instance.

Feedly isn't perfect, but switching to it will make Reader's demise easier to accept.

Canonical looks to raise $32 million via crowdfunding to develop Ubuntu Edge phones

Posted on 04:19 by Unknown

Canonical, the firm behind Ubuntu has announced a crowdfunding campaign to build the first batch of Ubuntu Edge phones.

The company hopes to raise $32 million in 30 days to manufacture a limited batch of 40,000 devices that will run both Android and open source Ubuntu Touch operating systems. Canonical is using the Indiegogo crowdfunding service, which is similar to the more popular Kickstarter, for the campaign and the Paypal electronic payment facility to collect the contributions.

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu, said in a press note, "Ubuntu Edge is the ultimate convergence device - challenging established norms for PCs and smartphones. The crowdfunding approach is a new way to prove demand for cutting edge technologies and new classes of devices, supporting the Ubuntu Edge is the best way to catalyse the next generation of personal devices from the industry."

The innovative Ubuntu Edge phone is said to support dual-boot with Ubuntu phone OS and Android, and will transform into a PC when docked with a monitor with full Ubuntu desktop with shared access to all phone's files.

The Indiegogo project lists the specifications of the Ubuntu Edge phones. The phone will be powered by a 'multi-core' processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and would include 128GB of storage. It will feature a 4.5-inch HD display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels and would sport a sapphire crystal display. There will be an 8-megapixel rear camera with low-light feature and a 2-megapixel front camera. Other features would include GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer and active noise cancellation. The Ubuntu Edge phone is said to feature stereo speakers with HD audio and dual-mic recording. Connectivity options include LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. However, the site clearly mentions that the specifications are subject to change.

As of filing this report, the campaign has already raised over 3 million dollars, less than 24 hours after launch.

AMD eyes gaming consoles to offset slowing PC sales

Posted on 05:36 by Unknown

Advanced Micro Devices forecast stronger-than-expected revenue growth of 22 percent in the third quarter from the second, as the chip maker expands into new game consoles and other markets to offset slowing sales of personal computers.

However, the stock reversed earlier gains on Thursday after AMD said gross margins would fall as it seeks a foothold in game consoles.

AMD, which for decades has competed against market leader Intel Corp in supplying chips for PCs, is rushing to refocus on new markets as consumers buy fewer laptops and more tablets and smartphones.

AMD processors are being used in Microsoft Corp's upcoming Xbox One and Sony Corp's next-generation PlayStation game consoles. These are largely behind AMD's upbeat revenue forecast.

AMD said its gross margin in the second quarter was 40 percent and would fall to about 36 percent in the third quarter. Analysts on average had expected a third-quarter gross margin of 39 percent.

With consumers increasingly playing games on tablets, it is also unclear how many of the new consoles Microsoft and Sony would sell, but optimism about the impact on AMD's revenue has helped drive its stock up 73 percent since the beginning of April.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said AMD's gross margin forecast was probably behind the after-hours drop in the company's shares.

AMD's report comes after Intel warned on Wednesday that it does not expect revenue to grow in 2013 due to slowing PC industry.

Global shipments of personal computers dropped 11 percent in the second quarter, the fifth straight quarterly decline in a market that has been devastated by the popularity of tablets.

AMD reported second-quarter revenue of $1.161 billion, down from $1.413 billion in the year-ago quarter. It said third-quarter revenue would rise 22 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, compared with the June quarter. That increase would be about $1.416 billion.

Analysts, on average, had expected revenue of $1.108 billion in the second quarter and $1.223 billion in the third quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

AMD posted a net loss of $74 million, or 10 cents a share, in the second quarter, compared with a profit of $37 million, or 5 cents a share, in the same quarter last year.

The company said its non-GAAP loss per share was 9 cents, better than the 12-cent loss expected by analysts.

AMD's stock declined 3.66 percent in extended trade after closing up 5.94 percent at $4.64.

Apple confirms its developer website was hacked

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

Apple has confirmed that the ongoing downtime on its developer website is an aftereffect of an intruder attempting to access personal information of its registered developers.

The Member Center on developer.apple.com lets registered Apple developers access the latest versions of iOS and Mac OS versions (including iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks beta), view developer documentation and other resources like WWDC videos, manage their submissions to the respective App Stores, and perform other activities. The Member Center has been down since Thursday for what initially seemed like regular maintenance, but as the downtime was extended, speculation emerged that it may due to security issues.

Apple has now confirmed that security of its developer website was indeed compromised but assured that 'sensitive personal information' was encrypted and couldn't have been accessed by the intruder. However, Apple said, information like developers' names as well as mailing and email addresses may have been exposed.

Apple explained the extended downtime by saying it was using the opportunity to 'completely overhaul' its developer systems, though the company did not give a timeframe on when the website would be accessible again.

Here's Apple's statement in full.

"We'll be back soon.

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers' names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we're completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

If your program membership was set to expire during this period, it has been extended and your app will remain on the App Store. If you have any other concerns about your account, please contact us.
Thank you for your patience."

Easy Ways to Unblock Websites

Posted on 03:16 by Unknown
How to Unblock Websites

1. Use web proxies.

Many free online services allow you to access blocked websites through a proxy server. A proxy server is an intermediary between the user and the server where the request was send. Here is a list with the most known resources of web proxies: Proxy.org, HideMyAss.com, Kortaz.com,KProxy.com and Anonymouse.org

2. Use VPN connections.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is like a tunnel over the public network. The advantage of using VPNs over web proxies is that VPNs are more secure because they are using advanced encryption and allow you to access all the applications (mail, chat, browser etc) in complete anonymity and not only the web sites. The most known free VPN is Hotspot Shield.

3. Use Hide IP software.

These are easy to use and even if the main functionality is to hide IP address and unblock websites, there are applications that can provide you more than that – like cleaning online tracks, testing proxies, manually adding proxy etc. Usually if you choose a free software, then this will provide you a minimal number of proxies and no other features than hiding IP address. Not My IP is one of the latest free hide IP address software that has already gained a large market followed by the old UltraSurf which is already very popular. Regarding paid applications that provide more features and have a complex structure, my recommendations are IP Privacy and Hide My IP.

4. Use Toolbars and Firefox add-ons.

Toolbars and Firefox add-ons are in fact software applications that work on specific browsers and with a simple click you can enable or disable online anonymity.

5. Use translation services.

Introduce the link of the blocked website in the translation field (for example in Google Translator) and choose a random language to translate from because translation from English to English is not supported.

6. Use Google cache.

In the Google search field type cache: before the URL of the blocked website. For example type cache:http://www.domain.com

7. Use Internet Archive.

Internet Archive allows you to view blocked websites through the Wayback Machine. This will retrieve all pages of a specific website indifferent if the website is blocked.

8. Use Web2Mail service.

Web2Mail it is a free email service that can sent to your email address specific web pages. You sign up for an account and get set to receive specific websites by email.

9. Change the http of an URL into https

This is the easiest way to access blocked websites. Of course, this might not work every time but you have many other solutions also. This is the fastest one.

10. Use IP address of the website instead of URL.

To use the IP address of a website instead of URL, you must first find its IP. To do this open command prompt and type: “ping domain.com”.

Have any Asus? Is it your Pride?

Posted on 00:43 by Unknown

Here’s a contest by Asus for all Asus owners. Apparently there’s lots of “Pride” in this poster, which means Asus want you to show off your rig with their name in a photo and a video, alongside a ‘fairytale and happy ending ever after’ story at their site. But what’s in return? Apparently, a chance to win the next Asus Intel chipset motherboard (probably P67) including the processor, and that’s not all. You’ll also get either a ‘Republic of Gamers’ 3D notebook, or the grand price of an all-expenses paid trip to Asus HQ in Taiwan!

P/S: You only have about a week’s time to do this, as the deadline is 7th January 2011, before 23:59:59. For more info, head over to the source.

No wonder there’s so many people carrying Chi Hua Hua around when going out

Posted on 01:50 by Unknown

Lately there have been many people that I know keeping exotic dogs as pets. Somehow the dogs’ life seemed better than mine at times. Now I’ve got an answer. The US security gun, or war command center, Pentagon, spends $19 billion only to discover that the best bomb-detector is the ‘man’s best friend’. Yes, all those drones with super high-tech metal detectors or chemical sniffers, and super x-ray lens can all just go down the drain.

Despite being equipped with a slew of bomb-finding gadgets that cost billions, the American military only manage to locate about 50 percent of the improvised explosives planted in Afghanistan and Iraq. But that number jumps significantly to 80 percent when U.S. and Afghan patrols bring along their pet dogs for a sniff-heavy walk.

“Dogs are the best detectors,” Lieutenant General Michael Oates, the commander of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, told a conference yesterday, National Defense reports. That’s not the greatest admission for a well-funded organization – nearly $19 billion since 2004, according to a congressional committee – tasked with solving one of the military’s wickedest problems. And oh, the little doggy at the top is supposed to be a very happy Pomeranian with a nicely done hair treatment.

500 million people farming in Facebook

Posted on 03:37 by Unknown

These few weeks we’ve been flooded with huge amount of figures from the Silicon Valley. But it seemed that founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, also wants a piece of that party pie. He’s just announced through the official Facebook blog, that the site now has 500 million users. What a staggering amount of users that is, seeing that Facebook has just started connecting you and the chick that you ONS few years ago, and many other people since six years ago. I guess more and more people likes to virtually lawn their mow and steal your fruits and balls; because you can’t get caught and sued for stealing others’ veges and fruits in Facebook.

NTP readies to engulf a bigger meal after settling with RIM’s lawsuit

Posted on 02:17 by Unknown

Doesn’t mean much to end users, but this is still a big news, to me at least. NTP is a small technology company with a portfolio of dozen of patents. This including wireless email technology that harvested them a $612 million settlement out of RIM in 2006 after couple of years of litigation on court. Well the company is ready to set cruise control for a sweet ride over to the court again, as it’s suing nearly everyone from Silicon Valley, and around. Apple, Google, Microsoft, HTC, LG, and Motorola is getting sued for the same wireless email technology patent that cost RIM over half a billion dollars. That’s a huge load of money, and they’re getting ready to times it by a half a dozen at least.

The RIM case alone took nearly five years and ultimately involved USPTO re-examining several patents, rejecting some and then ultimately declaring some others valid in 2009. This surely won’t end swiftly and with ease. But we’ll be seeing some interesting things down this path. Apple and Microsoft have always have a history of cooperation and cross-licensing in the patent space, and thus I’m sure their lawyers would be having some fine lunch and gags before heading down lawsuit town. That’s yet to include the mammoth Google, and the Taiwanese handheld specialist HTC, the Korean electronics giant LG, and the pioneer in mobile phones Motorola. What a party!

“Applegirl” gets record deal, yet another YouTube star get signed

Thanks to four i-phones, some touch skills, and a cute voice (surprisingly good English, as most of my Korean friends does not speak fluent English, and even if they do, they don’t sound that cute), Kim Yeo-hee, a 22-year-old South Korean girl has attracted the music producers from Dreamhigh-Ent in Korea, and signed a deal with her.

Kim Yeo-hee has posted some home-made videos of hers on YouTube, singing Beyonce’s “Irresistible” and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”, while playing the music using ONLY four i-Phones and music creation apps.

The whole world is having fever, World Cup Fever!

Posted on 04:17 by Unknown

Friday marked a historic day for the Internet, as “heavy” traffic flooded the Internet. According to measurements by Akamai Technologies Inc. traffic for News sites globally started getting cramp at morning ET and peaked at Noon ET, with roughly 12.1 million visitors per minute. Traffic slowed down slightly at average 6.5 million, which is still considered above normal, well 130 percent to emphasize it.

Dataset shows that the Internet was most active during the Mexico-South African game, and stayed heavy through the France-Uruguay game. All this is thanks to the Internet providing stream to cover matches in South Africa for those with no access to TV, since Friday is a working day for many. Moreover, these figures mainly come from South America and Europe, not entirely dominated by North America. Asian countries do not contribute much to these numbers, mostly due to difference in time zone.

These figures far exceed the 8.5 million view-per-minute record set when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election. These prove that the whole world is more into Football, then the Internet president. No offence Obama, we still love you. But football is our life.

AUO shows off transparent multitouch display

Posted on 09:40 by Unknown

Remember how Tony Stark uses a transparent PDA device to hack the courthouse’s computer in Iron Man 2? I really fancy that technology, and surprising enough, we are now getting very close to such advancement. AUO is a technology corporate that has been pioneer in making absolutely stunning display technology. Lately they have displayed another revolutionary product at Display Taiwan 2010 – showing off a 2.4-inch transparent multitouch display.

AUO stated that they are targeting their display at GPS devices, though it does seemed fit to include such marvelously cool display into handheld devices, since the screen seemed to fully support multitouch function, though not that efficient yet. As you can see in the video, the zooming of the multitouch is not that smooth, and there seemed to be slight lag when flipping the pictures. Though, this seemed to be a small problem. With a simple tweak and optimization in the OS used it can be improved vastly.

Self proclaimed iPad wedding looks more like a tard.

Apple’s iPad is a revolutionary device indeed. But when obsession get’s overboard, it makes you look like a retard. Same goes to these bunches of geeks that carries their iPad in a wedding.

All the way down the aisle, and taking photos with your iPhone and updating your Facebook and Twitter while at it. They seriously need to be given a facepalm. Not that it’s wrong to read your bows from the iPad, but don’t you feel that just spoils the sacred feelings of a wedding? What more to call that an iPad wedding.
