Skype 5.0 for Windows defines a Facebook Phone

Posted on 01:34 by Unknown

Skype has turned their beta 5 to golden, and what you’re getting around this time is something nearing the phrase of a ‘Facebook phone’. Yes, there’s some ‘drastic’ change to the interface, but what’s more important to note is the integration of Facebook into Skype 5.0. Sad but true, everything these days revolves around Facebook.

The new version still has a familiar look and feel, but the most noticeable changes are the addition of photos to the contacts list and the new Facebook tab. Logging into your Facebook account within the program populates your regular News Feed, but also attaches Skype call / SMS buttons next to friends that have either their Skype handles or mobile phone numbers listed on Facebook. Hit one of the buttons and you’re, well, connected! There’s also an option to view your Facebook Phonebook, which basically lists all your contacts’ mobile phone numbers — though, oddly, it doesn’t list Skype handles within that area.

Of course, the final version still allows for 10-way video calls and includes the automatic call recovery feature, which brilliantly reconnects dropped calls as if the drop didn’t really happen. I love this feature, as I no longer need to Alt + Tab in game when my mates dropped from Skype. So hurry up and get yours now via the source link.

Desktop Earth: The Earth on your desktop, real time updated.

Posted on 04:25 by Unknown

Desktop Earth is an app that lets you have generated wallpapers from satellite imagery of our home planet. It runs from the system tray, continuously updating the wallpaper to reflect changes in sunlight, foliage and even snow cover. Automatically resizing images to match the Windows PC’s native resolution and reduce the load on the system, Desktop Earth takes care of itself for the most part. However, the user can control the level of cloud cover, which time zone the wallpaper is centered on, if night lights appear on the dark areas of the satellite images, and of course, the setting for updates.

Needless to say, Desktop Earth requires a permanent internet connection. It won’t update if you get offline. the utility can be downloaded here.

IE9 Preview 3 utilizes video acceleration as selling point

Posted on 00:44 by Unknown

Microsoft has just demonstrated Internet Explorer 9 Preview 3 (IE9) in San Francisco with hardware partners. What’s new is that Microsoft has integrated Direct X for 2D and video acceleration for HTML5 content. Microsoft showcases this with hundreds of 3D fish swimming in IE9 at 60fps with no lags, by fully utilizing graphic acceleration.

It’s a very neat idea to offload the work from the CPU to the GPU to handle what they’re good at, and that is graphics. What’s more, they’re based on Direct X which the graphic vendors, Intel, Nvidia, and AMD are good at. It looks like massively awesome graphics experience will be dreams come true for web developers as they can finally embrace what they wish to show, and fully capable on the browser. Looks like Firefox and Chrome needs to catch up with this new trend. However, its still sweet times as the web has yet to fully embrace HTML5 standard, and so Google and Mozilla can take their time to develop this build across multiple platform.

New Safari Zoo in town

Posted on 01:05 by Unknown

Something that Steve Jobs left out at the WWDC 2010, is the release of Safari 5, Apple’s notorious browser. With Safari 5, Apple wishes to have a battlefield in the browser market, as HTML5 gets picked up by more developers.

Apple claimed a 30% boost in performance with the new zoo. Along with it, is the new Safari Reader, which gives users the browsing experience like reading PDF. The Reader feature auto-detects articles within webpages and pulls them out for an unencumbered text-only view. A very cool and niche feature indeed, but not that smart yet atm, as I notice not many sites are working with Reader. Perhaps some tweaking needs to be done, both on developers’ side and the browsers’ team. Apple is also adding in Extensions (think Firefox’s Add-Ons) to the browser, allowing devs to use HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to put some make-up for their site for cooler browsing experience.

Let’s have a run-down of the new features.

* Safari Reader – new way to view articles on the web in a single, clutter-free page
* Improved performance – executes Javascript up to 25% faster than Safari 4, better page caching, and DNS prefetching which speeds up browsing
* Bing search option – Bing search by Microsoft to be integrated into Safari’s search field, though Google is still the default
* Improved HTML5 support – dozens of new HTML5 features like Geolocation, full screen for HTML5 videos, closed caption for HTML5 videos, new sectioning elements (article, aside, footer, header, hgroup, nav and section), HTML5 Ajax History, EventSource, WebSocket, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, and HTML5 Ruby
* Safari Developer Tools – new Timeline Panel in the Webi Inspector shows how Safari interacts with a website and identifies areas for optimization. New keyboard shortcuts make it faster to switch between panels.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 public beta coming soon

Posted on 00:56 by Unknown

Microsoft is finalizing the 1st service pack for Windows 7, as they roll out public-beta in the end of July. Unlike Vista’s SP1 which is much needed to cover up the ugly things, Windows 7 is rather stable as it is. This SP1 for Windows 7 is a combination of updates and patches, besides the Remote Desktop needed to support the feature of Windows Server 2008 R2 that will provide virtualization capabilities to help enhance the Windows VDI experience:. Much for the corporate side, instead of home users. The SP1 is expected to go gold in Q4 2010.

3D Mark is finally ready to crunch your DirectX 11 GPU.

Posted on 00:39 by Unknown

It’s been quite some time since the last of the 3DMark from FutureMark surfaced. That’s probably due to their intensive development to develop a new version of the highly rated benchmark software used worldwide. The new version includes new tessellation techniques to add amazing depth and details to newer games. The new software will be able to stress DirectX 11 GPUs to the fullest.

FutureMark stated that the software will be showcased to public at Computex and will be available on retail in Q3 of 2010. As usual, a free version will also be available for home gamers to drool over the uber graphics generated by their new and underutilized babies.

Looks like I finally have an excuse to go upgrade my system and overclock it. Video after the break.

Fancy Windows 7 might not be so save after all

Posted on 04:24 by Unknown

Well looks like someone has found serious security vulnerability in Bill Gate’s latest money-milking operating system the Windows 7. Apparently users may be exposed to code execution and denial-of-service attacks, Microsoft warned in an advisory issued on Tuesday.

The threat, which was openly discussed ahead of Microsoft’s advisory, only affects the latest Windows 7 and windows Server 2008 R2, though was denied of any forms of attacks attempted related to exploiting this flaw.

This issue was found in the Canonical Display Driver (cdd.dll), which is used by Windows 7 to unify the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) and DirectX drawing.

MSRC blog:

Code execution, while possible in theory, would be very difficult due to memory randomization both in kernel memory and via Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). Additionally, this vulnerability only affects Windows systems if they have the Aero theme installed; Aero is not switched on by default in Windows Server 2008 R2, nor does 2008 R2 include Aero-capable graphics drivers by default.

Microsoft believes that, in case where the attacker successfully exploited this vulnerability, the affected system would stop to respond, and automatically restart. Therefore, the Windows 7 teams are now standing by for processing the patches need once investigations are complete.

So I guess this is a good time to disable that Windows Aero Theme huh?
