Microsoft New Blue Tinted Xbox 360

Posted on 03:08 by Unknown

Microsoft unveils a new blue tinted Xbox 360 for developers only at GDC 09.

More important than the new color is that it doubles the memory of the standard Xbox 360 to 1GB, making life easier for developers trying to tweak their software.

Microsoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in Skype

Posted on 05:11 by Unknown

So Microsoft launched a new email service today — not a redesigned version of Hotmail, but a completely new, built-from-the-ground-up service. It’s called Outlook.com, and for now, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail, as Microsoft attempts to distance itself from Hotmail’s bad rap. As it happens, the email features are basically the same across the two services, but from a visual standpoint, Outlook.com is everything Hotmail is not: where Hotmail has distracting banners and video ads, Outlook’s are discreet.

Indeed, you won’t find any targeted ads on conversations with individual people (newsletters and such are still fair game). In lieu of those creepy personalized ads, you’ll see quick access to Twitter and Facebook, where you can retweet and like things, as well as post comments. Skype integration is coming too (finally!), though that feature isn’t live today. Most importantly, though, it brings a fresh, minimal interface designed to lure away Gmail users who wouldn’t have otherwise given Hotmail the time of day.

Outlook.com is open to the public starting today. You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address. Though it’s still in its preview phase, anyone can sign up (read: no invites necessary). Storage is “virtually” unlimited — Microsoft doesn’t want to promise potential spammers a limitless account — and anyone creating a Microsoft account for the first time gets the usual 7GB of complimentary SkyDrive storage. Hit up that source link if you want check it out yourself.

Microsoft applies for high-performance touchscreen patent.

Posted on 10:40 by Unknown

Remember when Microsoft got us all salivating with a proof-of-concept demo that took touchscreen lag from 100ms to 1ms? Well, Redmond is protecting the product of its tireless research by applying for a patent. The claim focuses heavily on the use of a predictive system that takes an educated guess as to where you’re going to move next, and does some serious preprocessing to minimize lag. The result is a smooth moving UI, so long as you don’t surprise the predictive algorithms. Do something completely unanticipated and all those preloaded animations must be flushed, resulting in some graphical stutter. We wouldn’t get too excited just yet, though, the broad patent, seems like it’s a long way out from landing in a smartphone or tablet. The clip we saw in March (embedded after the break) is little more than a white splotch that follows your finger. But, if even some of this tech makes into future Windows products, expect your touchscreen experience to be a much smoother one.

Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 RC goes public, final around the corner

Posted on 01:19 by Unknown

It’s been rather quiet since the last news, but Microsoft has finally announced today the Release Candidate (RC) for their Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to the public. What does that mean? Well, simple. The final is just around the corner. A month or so if we go by the usual. As previously announced, the only new features added to the SP1 are the Windows Server 2008 R2-related virtualization technologies, Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX, and while Windows 7 SP1 will enable PCs to take advantage of these server-based features to provide a more scalable and richer VDI experience for end users, there are no additional new features specific to Windows 7. I don’t really recommend downloading it, if you’re a typical user, as beta usually will come with a bug or few, despite being heavily tested. But if you’re the adventurous type, there’s no harm in hitting the source. Seriously, the service pack doesn’t do much to commoners.

Office 2011 for Mac goes official

Posted on 01:11 by Unknown

Yes, we’ve been using Office 2010 for quite some time now, but Microsoft sure has not forgotten the Mac users. Yes, we might have a good debate in between Windows and other OS, but there’s no deny that despite there’s so many alternatives out there, free or not, Microsoft’s flagship desktop suite of productivity, Microsoft Office is still the best out there.

“We develop Office for Mac to give you the tools to create great-looking and compatible documents — with options to pick the right edition for your Mac needs,” said Eric Wilfrid, general manager, Macintosh Business Unit (MacBU) at Microsoft Corp. “More than ever before, Office 2011 brings the familiar productivity tools and features of Microsoft Office to a suite of applications that work great on the Mac.”

Office 2011 for Mac replaces Microsoft’s Mac-specific Entourage email app with the industry standard Outlook, brings in some interface tweaks from Office 2010 over in PC land, and integrates with those Office Web Apps you’ve been hearing so much about. The entire “Home & Business” bundle goes for $279, and if you’re not so into Outlook, you can get the much cheaper “Home & Student” which only comes with Word / PowerPoint / Excel for $149. I think the “Home & Student” package is a steal, really.

Windows 8 about two years away, according to Microsoft Netherlands

Posted on 03:20 by Unknown

Well, this is according to Microsoft Netherlands, and also an allegedly leaked product roadmap. Buried at the bottom of a press release celebrating the first birthday of Windows 7, you’ll find the above Dutch phrase, which Google Translate miserably translated (with lots of grammar error it seemed) as “Furthermore, Microsoft is of course the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before “Windows 8″ on the market.” But looking at Microsoft who likes to delay their products (oh hi Vista), I’ll take this with a pint of salt.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Microsoft’s Windows 7, and what’s more to celebrate this grand birthday than with a big number celebration tagging along? Yes, in this one year since the release of Windows 7, Microsoft has sold 240 million licenses of it.

Brandon LeBlanc, a Microsoft spokesman, calls it “the fastest selling operating system in history” in a blog post.

“Six months after launch, 100 percent (over 18,000) of our OEM partners were selling Windows 7 PCs versus 70 percent for Windows Vista PCs at a comparable time period,” LeBlanc wrote.

Earlier this month, Microsoft brought back the Windows 7 Family Pack, which provides upgrade licenses to Windows 7 Home Premium for up to three devices for $149.99. It is available now in the U.S.; after Oct. 22, the family pack offering will expand to Canada, the U.K., Germany, France, Australia and other international markets.

Several Microsoft employees posted their seven favourite features about Windows 7 on the company’s blog. To commemorate the anniversary, LeBlanc asked people to do the same in the comments section for a chance to win a full copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (and some Microsoft stickers). You have until 8am Pacific on Oct. 27 to submit your thoughts.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone Developer Tools package goes to beta

Posted on 00:53 by Unknown

Microsoft has officially stated that the Windows Phone 7 developer tool is a go, and gives it a ‘beta’ label. Developers can work their magic around with full confidence as Microsoft stated that this release “represents the near final version”. The new API now includes Expression Blend fully integrated. While developers worldwide are testing their apps on an emulator, some are lucky enough to receive demo units for developers as Microsoft starts shipping out developer devices. Stay tuned, as the Windows Phone 7 might just be around the corner as the chefs start to get busy in their kitchen for the launching.

Windows Live Essential Beta out, we’re testing it.

Posted on 00:27 by Unknown

Microsoft has just released Windows Live Essential Beta to the public, and we’re still testing it out. You can download your own Essential by following the link at the bottom. We’re still in the process of testing it out. It looks rather massive though.

Integration with Your Favorite Social Web Sites – share your activity with all your social network in a simple page
This is rather bold, and among the biggest changes involved. The Essential has added a ridiculously long list of web services and social networks into its support. Now you’re able to connect all your accounts from those social networks and simultaneously update all of them in Essential. You can even share your activities in Windows Live to those sites using Essential.

It’s best to head over to your Windows Live account page to control your privacy settings first, in order to have a control over whatever you would like to share.

Windows Live Messenger – gets a new look, the rather older ’simplify’ look is now gone.
Windows Live Messenger gets a revamped look, adding support for Facebook and MySpace. Now you can comment and see your friends’ updated status while being connected to Windows Live Messenger chat buddies. You can also add other people from other services like Google Contacts or LinkedIn, but they will have to accept your invite before you can communicate via Windows Live.

Windows Live Movie Maker – easily edit your videos and upload to YouTube snappily
Likewise with the updated Windows Live Movie Maker, it’s now much easier to publish your videos to SkyDrive, YouTube, or Facebook without much hassle. You can easily manage all your private videos, and easily share them on specific social sites.

Windows Live Mail – combo of Outlook and Word
The Windows Live Mail beta adds support for the newly redesigned Hotmail, besides other email services such as Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail. There’s not much else here except that it’s much easier to add your webmail, and Mail is a decent option for a Microsoft-built desktop email client without shelling out for Outlook. Looked very refined indeed.

Windows Live Sync – file sharing made easy!
Now this is also massive, to me. You can sync all your files that you wanna share across all your PCs in the network, as well as share it onto Microsoft’s online file storage service, SkyDrive. But it doesn’t stop there, as you can even sync your IE’s settings and your MS Office’s settings across your whole Windows Live platform, making office works easily accessible across all your networks. Talk about virtual workspace done right, if you set it up correctly. Remote access for your computers is also made available for Live Sync, though we’ve yet to test it out.

Windows Live Writer – crafted specially for bloggers
Something that I believe many bloggers will love, the Live Writer connects to majority of your blogging service sites like Blogger, Blogspot, Spaces, and Wordpress. Update your blog easily, without the need to login specifically onto that particular site, now this is really “Blogging made Easy”.
