Friday marked a historic day for the Internet, as “heavy” traffic flooded the Internet. According to measurements by Akamai Technologies Inc. traffic for News sites globally started getting cramp at morning ET and peaked at Noon ET, with roughly 12.1 million visitors per minute. Traffic slowed down slightly at average 6.5 million, which is still considered above normal, well 130 percent to emphasize it.
Dataset shows that the Internet was most active during the Mexico-South African game, and stayed heavy through the France-Uruguay game. All this is thanks to the Internet providing stream to cover matches in South Africa for those with no access to TV, since Friday is a working day for many. Moreover, these figures mainly come from South America and Europe, not entirely dominated by North America. Asian countries do not contribute much to these numbers, mostly due to difference in time zone.
These figures far exceed the 8.5 million view-per-minute record set when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election. These prove that the whole world is more into Football, then the Internet president. No offence Obama, we still love you. But football is our life.
