Strangely this did not come out from WWDC, but anyway it is still a great update from the already-dated mini. It seemed that Apple did not forget the desktop crowd despite the fuss going on over the handheld market. Thanks for the love, Apple.

The Mac mini gets a unibody aluminum exterior which looks absolutely sexy and gorgeous, as usual from the design lab of Apple. But there’s another twist. It seemed that there’s a new enclosure ala removable panel at the bottom which allows users to have access to the memory slots. That sure comes in handy.

Apple also adds in a slight added punch to the mini’s fist, though not a very strong punch I might say. For the price of $699, you’ll get a somewhat much-dated 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. There’s also an SD card reader, 802.11n wireless integrated, a Mini DisplayPort, and also an Nvidia GeForce 320M chip lingering inside, which Apple claims is a doubling of graphics performance. But that doesn’t seem to be doubling to me. HDMI port is finally included, which makes me wonder whether this baby would be a perfect fit for the HTPC role in my living room. I was actually dreaming of a Core i3 update with H55M chipset running on Intel HD Graphics. Again, Apple seemed to be so dated when it comes to desktop hardware.

But there’s good news for those minimalist. The new chassis is 1.4-inch tall, yet Apple manages to hamper everything from chips and salmon to power circuitry and fries into the new unibody. This actually means that the white glossy power brick is now gone. Not really gone, but actually its hidden in the chassis too. This seemed to be the biggest news and selling point for the new mini I guess. Now the mini is a real mini.

Customization is still available, of kush. Apple stills allow customers to swap the optical drive for an additional HDD. For $999, there’s two 500GB bricks for you, as well as the Snow Leopard Server (what?), 4GB of RAM, and a slightly faster 2.66GHz Intel chip. Still looks very premium to me.

The new removable compartment.

Reveals the inner intestines of the Mac Mini after removing the cover. See the ram slot?
